South Korea Highlights Indonesia's Role in Energy
President of South Korea Lee Jae Myung positioned Indonesia as one of the key pillars in maintaining global stability, particularly in the energy sector. This was stated during a bilateral meeting with Prabowo Subianto at Cheong Wa Dae on Wednesday (1/4).
In the meeting, Lee highlighted Indonesia’s role as a stable energy supplier for South Korea, especially amid increasing global uncertainties.
“We are very confident knowing that Indonesia provides LNG and coal very stably to Korea,” said Lee, as quoted from the press release.
According to him, the world situation influenced by various crises, including dynamics in the Middle East, makes economic cooperation between countries increasingly crucial. He assessed that relations between Indonesia and South Korea need to be strengthened to dampen the impact of such global turbulences.
“I believe we need to enhance economic cooperation between our two countries to minimise the negative impacts of those global issues,” he continued.
Besides energy and economic aspects, Lee also emphasised the similarity of values between the two countries as the foundation for long-term cooperation. He mentioned democracy, free trade, and commitment to a rules-based order as common ground that strengthens the positions of both countries amid global crises.
“Cooperation between our two countries, which share values of democracy, free trade, and a rules-based order, will shine brightly, especially in crisis situations like the one we are experiencing now,” he stated.
Lee also opened up space for broader dialogue, not only related to bilateral relations but also joint contributions to the global order. He views Indonesia and South Korea as middle powers that can play a larger role on the international stage.
“I look forward to an honest exchange of views with President Prabowo, not only about advancing our bilateral relations but also about various ways to contribute together to the international community as responsible middle powers,” he said.
Amid the strategic discussions, Lee also conveyed condolences for the fallen Indonesian soldiers in the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, signifying the humanitarian dimension in the relations between the two countries.
“I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the Indonesian military members participating in the peacekeeping operation in Lebanon who have passed away due to an explosion,” he said.
