South Jakarta mayoralty to move
JAKARTA (JP): The South Jakarta Mayoralty plans to move its office from Jl. Trunojoyo to a new location further south on Jl. Prapanca Raya, a senior municipality official said yesterday.
The assistant secretary on economic and development affairs, Prawoto S. Danoemihardjo, said construction of the Rp 54.8 billion ($22 million) project should begin soon so the 4,626 graves on the proposed site could be removed, with the agreement of their relatives.
The administration would pay for the cost of removing them to alternative cemeteries such as Tanah Kusir and Kampung Atas, he said after a meeting to discuss the plan at City Hall.
The new site overlaps the Blok P cemetery.
Prawoto said part of the cemetery, covering 4.7 hectares, had been closed since 1975.
He declined to say what the administration plans to do with the current office, which is strategically located.
The building is adjacent to the ASEAN Secretariat and the recently gutted office of the National Police headquarters.
But the property is not for sale or for lease, he said.
The new mayoralty's three-block office complex will be built on 25,370 square meters of land. The mayoralty office will occupy a 16-story building. Two other 4-story buildings will be used for public service offices.
Construction is expected to be completed by 2001. (04)
