Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Sub-Directorate of Food Security, Maritime, and Agriculture (Sudin KPKP) of South Jakarta has carried out the destruction of sailfin catfish by slicing and burying them as a follow-up to the Governor of DKI Jakarta’s instructions to safeguard the environmental ecosystem.

“After being caught, the sailfin catfish will be destroyed by slicing them in half and burying them at the location we have designated,” said the Head of the Fisheries Section of the Sudin KPKP South Jakarta, Arief Prakoso, to reporters in Jakarta on Thursday.

Arief explained that technically, the capture begins from the water gate to the area known to residents as Kali Tengah.

The caught fish will then be destroyed by burying them at a predetermined location near the water gate.

The sailfin catfish capture operation will also be held simultaneously in five Jakarta regions on Friday, in line with the Governor of DKI Jakarta’s directives.

In its implementation, this operation involves cross-unit collaboration among regional apparatus work units (UKPD), including the Centre for Production, Inspection, and Certification of Fishery Products, the Sub-Directorate of Environment (LH), the Sub-Directorate of Water Resources (SDA), and the Water Body Agency.

“Friday’s planned activity is a simultaneous sailfin catfish capture operation across DKI Jakarta; for the South Jakarta region, it will be carried out at the Phb Setu Babakan channel,” he said.

Additionally, sub-districts, districts, and Public Infrastructure and Facilities Handling Officers (PPSU) will also be deployed.

Nearly 100 personnel will be deployed for the activity.

The Mayor of South Jakarta, Muhammad Anwar, also plans to attend directly to monitor the operation.

This activity is the government’s effort to control the sailfin catfish population, which is considered disruptive to the aquatic ecosystem.

“We invite all relevant parties to jointly carry out the sailfin catfish capture,” he said.

As is known, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will conduct river and water channel cleaning, as well as sailfin catfish removal, in the capital on Friday (17/4).

The fish are considered capable of destroying dykes and also eating other fish and their eggs, thus necessitating their removal.

The cleaning activity also aims to improve water channels, dredge mud, and so on, as preparation for the rainy season forecasted to occur in September 2026.
