South African food at JW Marriott Jakarta

Kurniawan Hari, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

For those of you who are adventurous cuisine-seekers, the food promotion at the Sailendra Restaurant at the comfortable JW Marriott Hotel might be just what you crave.

From April 21 through April 30, the Sailendra Restaurant offers South African food served in baked-clay bowl.

Visitors might want to try the lamb sosatie with dried apricot or the boland chicken breast stuffed with dried fruit or the bobotie with chutney.

The lamb sosatie is a bit like local favorite sate kambing (roasted lamb with thick, sweet soya sauce) while the boland chicken breast is as tasty as the roasted chicken.

People may also taste the boland salad -- boiled eggs diced with heavy coconut milk or the sweet and sour custard onions.

Chef Gerard Van Staden said that the seasonings used in South African cuisine had been influenced by European and Malay food. So it may not be surprising to see some things that bear some similarities to local dishes.

For people who like fresh, healthy drinks, they can taste the juice of mango fruit mixed with yoghurt.

The food promotion also offers South African wine, the Amarula and the Meerlust. The amarula, which is made of marula fruit (Sclerocarrya birrea) is getting more and more popular around the world.

Mellani Solagratia, the Public Relations Manager of JW Marriott Jakarta, said that visitors to the Sailendra Restaurant may also have the chance to win one return ticket on Emirates Airlines from Jakarta to Johannesburg.

The lucky winner will also get a two-night stay at the Beverly Hills Southern Sun Hotel.

Each diner will be charged Rp 135,000 for the Buffet and Rp165,000 for the Buffet Plus.
