Son of Riza Chalid Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison in Oil Corruption Case

  • Special Report

Jakarta, VIVA – The son of suspect Riza Chalid, Muhammad Kerry Andrianto Riza, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of corruption in the case of the management of crude oil and refinery products during the period 2018-2023.

Chief Justice Fajar Kusuma Aji stated that Kerry had enriched himself by Rp2.9 trillion in the case, resulting in state losses of Rp285.18 trillion.

“The defendant, Kerry, has been proven guilty of committing the crime of corruption together, as in the primary indictment,” said the Chief Justice during the reading of the verdict at the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court, Friday.

The act of enriching himself was carried out by Kerry, as the beneficial owner of PT Navigator Khatulistiwa, in the arrangement for the procurement of leases for three ships belonging to PT Jenggala Maritim Nusantara (JMN) and the leasing of the Merak Oil Fuel Terminal (TBBM).

Thus, Kerry was also sentenced to a fine of Rp1 billion, which must be paid within a period of 1 month and can be extended for a maximum of 1 month from the date the verdict takes legal effect.

If the fine is not paid within the specified period, the defendant’s assets or income may be confiscated and auctioned to pay the fine.

In the event that the proceeds from the confiscation or auction of assets or income are insufficient or impossible to carry out, the Chief Justice stated that the unpaid fine will be replaced with a prison sentence of 190 days.

In addition, the panel of judges also imposed additional penalties on Kerry to pay compensation of Rp2.9 trillion, with a subsidiary of 5 years in prison.

For his actions, Kerry was found guilty of violating Article 603 in conjunction with Article 20 paragraph c of the National Criminal Code and Article 18 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption as amended and supplemented by Law Number 20 of 2021.

The panel of judges argued that Kerry’s actions did not support the government’s program to eradicate corruption, which is being actively pursued, thus aggravating the sentence.

Meanwhile, Kerry’s condition of not having been previously convicted and having a family to support was considered as a mitigating factor in the verdict.

In addition to Kerry, the verdicts were also read for the Commissioner of PT Pelayaran Mahameru Kencana Abadi (PMKA), Gading Ramadhan Juedo, and the Commissioner of PT JMN, Dimas Werhaspati.
