Son of Riza Chalid Sentenced to 15 Years, Father Still at Large
Muhammad Kerry Adrianto has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment after a judge found him guilty of involvement in a crude oil governance corruption case. Meanwhile, his father, businessman Riza Chalid, remains a fugitive.
According to reports consolidated on Friday, 27 February 2026, Muhammad Kerry Adrianto Riza was accused of involvement in alleged crude oil governance corruption that caused state losses. Kerry is known to be the son of Riza Chalid, one of the suspects in this case.
In the indictment, the alleged crude oil governance corruption case has caused state losses totalling IDR 285 trillion. Two key issues were identified as the basis of the problem: the import of refinery products or fuel oil (BBM) and the sale of non-subsidised diesel.
The judge’s panel stated that the element of causing financial loss to the state in the crude oil corruption case had been satisfied. The judges considered there to be state financial losses totalling IDR 9.4 trillion in the case, consistent with calculations by the State Audit Board (BPK).
“Based on the investigative audit report results by BPK RI, conducted to calculate state financial losses in crude oil governance at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, there are state financial losses at PT Pertamina of IDR 2.545 trillion, which forms part of the overall state financial losses in the sale of non-subsidised diesel by PT Pertamina and PT PPN in 2018-2023 totalling IDR 9.415 trillion,” stated the judge presiding over the Corruption Court in Central Jakarta.
However, the judges stated that the calculation of economic losses to the state of IDR 171 trillion remained assumption-based. The judges found the calculation not concrete and not certain.
“The judges considered that because state financial losses were strengthened by expert testimony, and because the calculation is assumption-based with many influencing factors, it remains uncertain and not concrete, and therefore the existence of economic losses to the state has not yet been proven,” the judges stated.
Following this, the judges announced verdicts against the defendants in this case, including Riza Chalid’s son Kerry Adrianto Riza. Kerry was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. The judges found Kerry guilty in the crude oil governance corruption case.
“The defendant Muhammad Kerry Adrianto is hereby found beyond reasonable doubt guilty of committing corruption as jointly charged in the primary indictment,” said the chief judge Fajar Kusuma Aji when announcing the verdict at the Corruption Court in Central Jakarta.
The judges ordered Kerry to pay a fine of IDR 1 billion, payable within one month and extendable for a maximum of one additional month from when the verdict becomes final.
The judges stipulated that if the fine is not paid within the specified timeframe, the convict’s assets or income may be seized and auctioned to settle the fine.
Additionally, Kerry was handed a supplementary sentence requiring payment of replacement funds totalling IDR 2.905 trillion, with a subsidiary sentence of 5 years imprisonment if the replacement funds are not paid.
Factors considered aggravating Kerry’s sentence included that his actions did not support the government’s intensive anti-corruption programme. Mitigating factors included that Kerry had no prior criminal record and had family dependents.
The verdict was not unanimous, as one of the four judges, Mulyono Dwi Purwanto, held a dissenting opinion. Judge Mulyono questioned the procedure for calculating the amount of state financial or economic losses in this case and doubted there was criminal intent regarding the leasing of tanks, viewing them as still in use and providing substantial benefit to the state.
