Son of Fugitive Riza Chalid Sentenced to 15 Years in Crude Oil Corruption Case
The son of fugitive Riza Chalid, Muhamad Kerry Adrianto Riza, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. The judge stated that Kerry was guilty in the case of corruption in the management of crude oil.
“Hereby declares that the Defendant Muhamad Kerry Adrianto above has been proven legally and convincingly guilty of committing the crime of corruption together as in the primary indictment,” said the chairman of the panel of judges, Fajar Kusuma Aji, when reading the verdict at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court, Friday (27/2/2026).
“Imposing a sentence on the Defendant Muhamad Kerry Adrianto, therefore, with a prison sentence of 15 years,” continued the judge.
The judge ordered Kerry to pay a fine of IDR 1 billion, which must be paid within 1 month and can be extended for a maximum of 1 month from the date the verdict has legal force.
The judge stipulated that if the fine is not paid within the specified period, the defendant’s assets or income may be seized and auctioned to pay the fine.
“In the event that the proceeds from the seizure or auction of assets or income are insufficient or impossible to carry out, the unpaid fine will be replaced with a prison sentence of 190 days,” said the judge.
In addition, Kerry was also sentenced to additional penalties by paying compensation of IDR 2,905,420,003,854 or a subsidiary of 5 years in prison.
The things that aggravate Kerry’s sentence are that the defendant’s actions do not support the government’s program which is intensively carrying out corruption eradication. Meanwhile, the mitigating factors are that the defendant has never been punished and the defendant has a family to support.
The verdict was not unanimous because judge member 4, namely judge Mulyono Dwi Purwanto, had a different opinion or dissenting opinion (DO). Judge Mulyono doubted the procedure for calculating the amount of financial or economic losses in this case.
Judge Mulyono also felt that there was no malicious intent to commit a crime in the matter of tank rental. In fact, he said that the tank is still being used and provides great benefits for the country.
“With these circumstances, according to the panel member, it is not fair for the defendants from PT OTM to be tried and sentenced,” said Judge Mulyono.
The judge stated that Kerry Adrianto was found guilty of violating Article 603 in conjunction with Article 20 paragraph C of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP) in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Law.
Previously, the Public Prosecutor (JPU) had demanded Kerry Adrianto with a sentence of 18 years in prison, a fine of IDR 1 billion or a subsidiary of 190 days in prison. The prosecutor also demanded that Kerry pay compensation of IDR 13,405,420,003,854 or a subsidiary of 10 years in prison.
The Indictment of Riza Chalid’s Son
Muhammad Kerry Adriano Riza was charged with being involved in alleged corruption in the management of oil which caused state losses reaching IDR 285 trillion. Kerry is known to be the son of M Riza Chalid, one of the suspects in this case whose whereabouts are still unknown.
In the indictment, the alleged corruption in the management of crude oil has caused state losses of IDR 285 trillion. There are two things that are allegedly the main problems, namely related to the import of refinery products or fuel oil (BBM) and related to the sale of non-subsidized diesel.
Here are the details of the calculation of state losses:
- Financial Losses to the State
USD 2,732,816,820.63 or USD 2.7 billion or IDR 45,091,477,539,395 or IDR 45.1 trillion (Exchange rate of IDR 16,500)
IDR 25,439,881,674,368.30 or IDR 25.4 trillion
Or a total of IDR 70,531,359,213,763.30 (IDR 70.5 trillion)
- Economic Losses to the State
The high price of fuel procurement which has an impact on the economic burden caused by the price of IDR 171,997,835,294,293 or IDR 172 trillion
Illegal profits obtained from the difference between the import price of fuel oil that exceeds the quota and the purchase price of crude oil and fuel oil from domestic sources of USD 2,617,683,340.41 or USD 2.6 billion or IDR 43,191,775,117,765 or IDR 43.1 trillion (exchange rate of IDR 16,500 thousand)
Or a total of IDR 215,189,610,412,058 (IDR 215.1 trillion).
So from the financial losses to the state and the economic losses to the state, the total is IDR 285,969,625,213,821.30 or more than IDR 285 trillion. However, this calculation uses the current average exchange rate, of course, the amount will be different if the Attorney General’s Office uses a different exchange rate.
