Soebagyo moves to Central Java

SEMARANG (JP): Maj. Gen. Soebagyo, a rising Army general, was installed yesterday as the new chief of the Diponegoro Military Regional Command which oversees Central Java and Yogyakarta.

With this latest posting, Soebagyo's resume makes him a powerful candidate for a top military job in the future.

His resume includes chief of the Army's Special Force Command (Kopassus) which he left last week, and a seven-year stint as a member of President Soeharto's security guard in 1986-1993. He was also a member of the Kopassus crack unit that stormed a Garuda Indonesia plane in 1982 that had been hijacked to Bangkok.

Soebagyo, 49 years old, is also one of the top officers from the National Military Academy's class of 1970.

Yesterday, he replaced Yusuf Kertanegara, who will soon move to Jakarta as an assistant to intelligence to the Armed Forces' chief of general affairs. (har/emb)
