Smart Ways to Manage Your THR for Singles and Families

The Tunjangan Hari Raya (THR), or holiday allowance, is often a major source of funds for various needs during Lebaran. However, without careful planning, that money can run out before the time comes. Therefore, it is important for people to manage THR in a wise way.

Financial planner and founder of Mitra Rencana Edukasi (MRE), Mike Rini Soetikno, says that needs during the Raya period can differ between those who are already married and those who are single. Nevertheless, the main thing both groups need to do is identify all expenditures related to the Raya period.

“Each expense should be arranged according to its priority level. It’s important for us to identify what Raya expenditures are, then set their priorities,” Mike said when contacted by Republika, on Thursday (5/3/2026).

For greater clarity, here are the details of prudent THR management for singles or those who are married, according to Mike:

  1. Prioritise the charitable budget

The first category of expenditure that must be prioritised is charity, especially zakat fitrah or zakat mal. According to Mike, this applies to both singles and those who are married.

In addition to zakat, the public can also allocate funds for infak, sedekah, as well as traditions of sharing with family or relatives. However, spending on the charitable budget should not exceed 20-25 percent of the total THR.

“So if someone receives a THR of Rp10 million, for example, the maximum around Rp2 million can be allocated to zakat, infak, sedekah, and sharing traditions,” Mike said.
