The government has confirmed that the revitalisation of the slum area in North Remu, spanning 15.4 hectares in Sorong District, Sorong City, will begin in June 2026.

This assurance was given during a field visit conducted by the Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP), Maruarar Sirait, also known as Ara, along with several related officials, on Monday (27/4/2026).

Ara emphasised that the slum area revitalisation is an important part of the government’s efforts to improve the quality of life for the community and will soon commence.

“The slum area revitalisation activities will begin in June 2026. We want to move quickly so that the community can soon feel the changes,” she stated, as quoted in a press release on Monday (27/4/2026).

Based on the plan, the approximately 15.4-hectare area will be revitalised in an integrated manner through various interventions.

The programme also includes housing revitalisation through the Self-Help Housing Stimulus Assistance (BSPS) scheme for 68 units.

In addition, local roads spanning 1,647 metres and drainage spanning 735 metres will be constructed to improve the quality of the settlement environment.

Thirty public street lighting points will also be installed to enhance security and comfort for residents.

In terms of fire disaster mitigation, the government will prepare evacuation routes, conduct outreach, and install evacuation signs in the area.

Ara stressed that slum area handling must be carried out in an integrated manner and involve various parties.

During the visit, she also engaged in dialogue with residents to gather aspirations regarding the area’s revitalisation needs.

The Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri), Tito Karnavian, added that the role of local government is crucial in supporting the programme’s success, particularly in spatial planning, land legality, and policy support.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, stated that her agency will support the provision of accurate data to ensure the programme runs on target.

The Governor of Southwest Papua, Elisa Kambu, also expressed the local government’s commitment to synergise with the central government in revitalising the slum area in Sorong.

The revitalisation of the North Remu slum area is expected not only to improve settlement quality but also to provide social and economic impacts for the local community.
