Residents affected by the ammonia gas leak from a crystal ice factory in Purwomartani, Kalasan, Sleman, have now returned to their respective homes. Previously, residents had evacuated after the ammonia gas leak occurred at the factory.

“Since yesterday (the residents who had evacuated) have returned home,” said Dukuh Bayen Mukti Sukamdani when contacted by reporters on Monday (11/5/2026).

Mukti explained that, based on the information received, the gas leak has been resolved. Nevertheless, an unpleasant odour is still detectable around the incident site.

“According to the information, it has (been resolved), but sometimes there’s still a slight smell around the location,” he said.

When asked about the cause of the leak, Mukti was not certain.

“Because according to the factory’s information, there was no trigger for the leak; it just leaked while they were about to start production,” he said.

Previously, the ammonia gas leak incident occurred at the ice factory in Purwomartani, Kalasan, Sleman. As a result, residents near the factory had to evacuate.

The incident took place on Friday (8/5) night. The Head of Emergency and Logistics Division of the Sleman BPBD, Bambang Kuntoro, detailed that the incident happened around 11:30 PM WIB. The leak was first noticed by employees who were working.

“I was called by Pak Dukuh at 1:30 AM while I was on patrol. Then the ammonia or methane gas used for the crystal ice at the ice factory west of the road leaked. People within a 200-300 metre radius experienced stinging eyes and a pungent smell,” Bambang explained when contacted by reporters on Saturday (9/5).

Bambang said that at least residents from six RTs around the factory were affected by this incident. The residents immediately evacuated to relatives’ homes.

“I asked them to call the fire department because we didn’t know how to handle it; for gas, we don’t know the method. Then the TRC team went out to distribute masks last night to reduce the smell,” he stated.

Personnel from the Sleman Fire Department have also sprayed the outside of the factory to disperse the gas. In addition, Bambang said, they coordinated with the Yogyakarta City Fire Department for handling measures.

“Then from our Operations Control Centre, we coordinated with the Yogyakarta City Fire Department because the city fire department reportedly has methods or equipment to handle the leak,” he revealed.
