SKK Migas Oversees Implementation of FID for Mako Gas Field Development
Jakarta — The Special Work Unit for Upstream Oil and Gas Operations (SKK Migas) is overseeing the implementation of the final investment decision (FID) for the development of the Mako Gas Field in the Duyung Work Area, offshore the Anambas Islands, Riau Islands Province.
The field is operated by contractor West Natuna Exploration Limited (WNEL).
“This investment decision demonstrates the government and KKKS’s strong commitment to accelerating development of potential gas fields. The Mako Gas Field is expected to provide a significant contribution to national gas production and support domestic energy requirements,” said SKK Migas Head Djoko Siswanto in a statement received in Jakarta on Monday.
He emphasised that SKK Migas will continue to oversee project implementation to ensure it proceeds according to plan, on schedule, within budget, whilst prioritising workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
This milestone represents an important turning point in the development of the Mako Gas Field. The post-FID implementation phase reflects synergy between the government and KKKS in supporting increased national gas production while strengthening Indonesia’s energy resilience.
The Mako project development is entering the main phases starting from pre-FID in 2025 until achieving first gas in Q4 2027.
Activities include engineering, procurement, construction, drilling, offshore installation, and commissioning and start-up.
The project is targeted to operate on schedule to support national energy requirements.
The Mako Gas Field is now part of a strategic investment developed through cooperation between the government, WNEL as operator, and PT Nations Natuna Barat, an entity under Arsari Group that will hold the majority stake in the Duyung Block.
As part of efforts to ensure gas commercialisation certainty, WNEL has signed a gas sales agreement (GSA) with PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) as the offtaker.
The GSA signature is an important foundation in supporting project viability whilst guaranteeing the absorption of Mako Field gas production for national power generation requirements.
The Mako Gas Field is estimated to begin production (onstream) in the fourth quarter of 2027 and is expected to deliver positive impact for the sustainability of Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas sector.
