Former Vice President General (retired) Try Sutrisno passed away on Monday, 2 March 2026. State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi confirmed the sad news. “It is true, we deeply mourn,” said Prasetyo on Monday.

Deceased Try Sutrisno breathed his last at Gatot Soebroto Army Central Hospital (RSPAD), Jakarta, at approximately 06.58 WIB. His remains were planned to be washed at RSPAD and then taken to the mourning house at Jalan Purwakarta Number 6, Menteng, Central Jakarta.

Try Sutrisno was the Vice President who accompanied President Suharto during his leadership in the period 1993–1998. The sixth Vice President was born in Surabaya, East Java, on 15 November 1935.

According to the TNI Information Centre, Try began his military career as a cadet at the Army Technical Academy (Atekad). Try was involved in the Operation to Liberate West Irian in 1962, which introduced him to Suharto. At that time, Suharto was appointed by Sukarno as Commander of the Mandala Command stationed in Sulawesi.

In 1974, Try was selected as President Suharto’s aide-de-camp, which propelled his career forward. In August 1985, Try’s rank was promoted to Lieutenant General and he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army. Less than a year later, in June 1986, Try Sutrisno was entrusted to serve as Chief of Staff of the Army.

He held the position of Chief of Staff of the Army for only approximately one and a half years because in early 1988 he was promoted to Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia, replacing General LB Moerdani.

Subsequently, Try Sutrisno was appointed as Vice President accompanying Suharto through the General Assembly of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) in 1993.
