Six bomb suspects arrested by police
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta
Security officers arrested on Saturday six people suspected of
planting explosives that went of at the Graha Cijantung mall on
June 30, injuring at least eight shoppers.
The six have been identified as Atom, Abdullah, Ahmad,
Syahrul, Mudawali and Adi, alias Bambang, all of whom are said to
come from East Aceh.
The suspects are now being questioned at the Jakarta Police
Headquarters.
National Police chief, Gen. Da'i Bachtiar, said six other
members of the group were currently at large.
It is still unclear who arrested them, with both the police
and the Army's Special Force (Kopassus) claiming the credit.
"My subordinates have been working hard to unravel this case,
thanks to information from the public," Da'i told SCTV on
Saturday afternoon.
However, a well-placed source at Kopassus told The Jakarta
Post that the suspects had been arrested by the red berets.
"We've handed them over to the police for further
questioning," said the source.
Neither would reveal where they had arrested the suspects.
On Saturday afternoon, Da'i and other high-ranking police
officers, including National police spokesman, Insp. Gen. Saleh
Saaf, visited a rented house in Tapos village, Cimanggis, Depok,
where they found several grenades, homemade bombs, 20,000 rounds
of ammunition, over 160 magazines, several detonators, a pack of
marijuana, Rp 50 million (US$5,555) in cash and some military-
looking uniforms.
Eight people were injured when explosives went of at 7:20 p.m.
last Sunday in the basement of four-story Graha Cijantung mall,
which is located close to the Kopassus headquarters on Jl. Raya
Bogor, East Jakarta.
