Singapore Evaluates Nuclear Energy Plans
The Singapore government has announced plans to evaluate the potential use of nuclear energy as part of its energy diversification strategy. This initiative aims to support net-zero emissions targets while adhering to safety standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
According to VN Express, Singapore has scheduled a formal assessment supported by international experts beginning in 2027. This review will form the first phase of the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) mission to validate the nation’s progress and readiness in developing advanced nuclear technology.
The evaluation process will utilise the globally recognised Milestones Approach framework to ensure nuclear capacity development aligns with the established roadmap. However, the government has emphasised that no final decision has been made to adopt or commercially deploy nuclear energy within its territory.
Singapore continues to monitor global nuclear technology developments while collaborating with international partners. The primary focus of these collaborations is to enhance regulatory expertise and nuclear safety systems before any policy implementation.
Future decisions regarding nuclear energy usage will carefully consider critical factors including safety, reliability, affordability, and environmental sustainability, tailored to Singapore’s unique context as a city-state.
This assessment comes as Singapore, ranked Asia’s wealthiest nation in the 2026 Prosperity Index, explores all clean energy options to achieve carbon neutrality and maintain long-term energy resilience.
