SINGAPORE (Reuters): Singapore plans a $3.7 million scheme to
extend the number of roads drivers can check online to avoid
congestion.
The tiny city state already has multiple deterrents in place
to control the number of vehicles on the roads, including costly
permits on the purchase of cars and an electronic toll system.
The Junction Electronic Eyes System (J-Eyes) will monitor
traffic conditions at 100 intersections, with selected snapshots
and video images made available via the Internet, the Land
Transport Authority said on Monday.
"There are many ways to distribute traffic. By giving messages
over to the public in a real-time manner we hope it will change
the pattern," a spokesman said. The S$6.4 million ($3.7 million)
J-Eyes project will be carried out over the next 18 months.
