Signs of the times

From Jayakarta

Minister of Transmigration, Ir. Siswono Yudohusodo, insinuated recently that people and officials were sick. I am sure the Minister knew what he was talking about. He would not dare make such a scathing remark otherwise, the words were not said to seek popularity or to blast officialdom.

The insinuation he made drew the attention of top officials, and it became a serious matter.

As for me, a devout Moslem, Mr. Siswono's insinuation did not at all come as a surprise. Thousands of years ago God reminded His people in the Al-Baqarah letters verse 10:

"They were sick in their hearts and God worsened their condition, and they were made to suffer much because they twisted the truth."

Further in verse 122, God proclaimed: "If the heart is sick, this will lead to weakness of faith, and reluctance to abide by religious instructions and to seek to know its ensuing secrets and wisdom."

More so in these times of "crazy people," in which anything might happen.

Position, power, money, and ambition send people around with their heads in the clouds. Could this be some kind of sickness?

Corruption (not crime) has become a culture in our country, it ranks first place. Is this also an "illness"?

I am certain that all religions in the world condemn this trait and agree that it is the root of various ills.

Even wives and children could fall victim to the "sickness" if they have been enjoying the fruits of illegal activity. It would be the same as quenching one's thirst with dirty water. "A dirty well sprouts forth murky waters."

I hope 1997 will become the starting point of preventing various ills. Prevention is better than healing.
