        "content": "<p>Signs of the times<\/p>\n<p>From Jayakarta<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Transmigration, Ir. Siswono Yudohusodo, insinuated<br>\nrecently that people and officials were sick. I am sure the<br>\nMinister knew what he was talking about. He would not dare make<br>\nsuch a scathing remark otherwise, the words were not said to seek<br>\npopularity or to blast officialdom.<\/p>\n<p>The insinuation he made drew the attention of top officials,<br>\nand it became a serious matter.<\/p>\n<p>As for me, a devout Moslem, Mr. Siswono's insinuation did not<br>\nat all come as a surprise. Thousands of years ago God reminded<br>\nHis people in the Al-Baqarah letters verse 10:<\/p>\n<p>\"They were sick in their hearts and God worsened their<br>\ncondition, and they were made to suffer much because they twisted<br>\nthe truth.\"<\/p>\n<p>Further in verse 122, God proclaimed: \"If the heart is sick,<br>\nthis will lead to weakness of faith, and reluctance to abide by<br>\nreligious instructions and to seek to know its ensuing secrets<br>\nand wisdom.\"<\/p>\n<p>More so in these times of \"crazy people,\" in which anything<br>\nmight happen.<\/p>\n<p>Position, power, money, and ambition send people around with<br>\ntheir heads in the clouds. Could this be some kind of sickness?<\/p>\n<p>Corruption (not crime) has become a culture in our country, it<br>\nranks first place. Is this also an \"illness\"?<\/p>\n<p>I am certain that all religions in the world condemn this<br>\ntrait and agree that it is the root of various ills.<\/p>\n<p>Even wives and children could fall victim to the \"sickness\" if<br>\nthey have been enjoying the fruits of illegal activity. It would<br>\nbe the same as quenching one's thirst with dirty water. \"A dirty<br>\nwell sprouts forth murky waters.\"<\/p>\n<p>I hope 1997 will become the starting point of preventing<br>\nvarious ills.
