Siemens wins Malaysian order
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): German conglomerate Siemens has won a
contract to built a two-billion-ringgit (US$526 million) power
plant in Malaysia, according to a report Saturday.
The Sun newspaper said the Malaysian Resources Corporation
Bhd. (MRCB) awarded the turnkey contract to Siemens for the
engineering, procurement and construction of the power plant in
Selangor state.
The plant would produce about 710 megawatts of electricity
using a Siemens gas turbine, the paper said, adding it would go
into operation in two phases -- mid-2002 and in 2003.
Abdul Rahman Maidin, president of MRCB, said power generation
was expected to contribute to the company's earnings, noting
electricity demand rose 17.2 percent over the 14 months to March
this year to a new record of 9,263 megawatts.
"This new power plant will enhance the reliability and
security of power supply for the Klang Valley and the new
government administrative center in Putrajaya," Abdul Rahman
said.
