The sidewalk in front of the former Selaparang Airport in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), is set to be revamped. The Mataram Public Works and Spatial Planning Department (PUPR) has allocated a budget of around Rp 400 million for the refurbishment of the sidewalk.

“Our current target is the area in front of the former airport, right in front of Mario Supermarket. For the section in front of Mario Supermarket, we will conceptualise planter boxes, like a small garden, and then the sidewalk design for pedestrians,” said the Head of the Mataram PUPR Department, Lale Widiahning, when interviewed on Thursday (26/3/2026).

In addition to the refurbishment involving painting, the Mataram PUPR Department also plans to add benches at several points along the sidewalk.

“These benches are actually to help pedestrians who want to rest briefly before continuing their journey. In front of Mario, I think adding benches would not be very effective, but at Udayana, we will add them later,” Lale explained.

“We are targeting Rp 400 million. The points start from the east, then to the west, hopefully extending beyond the western gate of the airport. It’s not up to 500 metres because the refurbishment is not solely about installing sidewalks, but also includes planters and direct painting. We will maximise the beauty there, making it aesthetic,” Lale stated.

For information, as many as 105 wild street vendors (PKL) who previously occupied Jalan Adi Sucipto have been relocated to the former Selaparang Airport area in Mataram City. The refurbishment has made the sidewalks and road body, which were previously crowded with stalls, more orderly and no longer causing traffic jams.

The relocation was carried out on the instructions of the Mayor of Mataram, Mohan Roliskana, to reduce the messiness in the Jalan Adi Sucipto corridor and centralise PKL activities in one special zone.
