JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – As people observe the Lebaran Mudik tradition, it is not uncommon for many to want to take their motorcycles home. However, long-distance travel on two-wheeled vehicles is not recommended. Consequently, sending a motorcycle to one’s hometown by train ahead of Mudik Lebaran has frequently become an option. Typically, there are several procedures that must be followed for the shipment of motorcycles, for example removing the wing mirrors and ensuring the fuel tank is empty.

Adjeng Putri Adhatu, Manager of Public Relations at KAI Logistik, said that the obligation for motor owners to remove the wing mirrors before being sent by train relates to safety. ‘Motorcycles are required to remove the mirrors and empty the fuel tank before shipment for safety reasons during the handling process,’ she told Kompas.com on Tuesday, 3 March 2026.

In more detail, Adjeng explained: firstly, removing the mirrors is done to minimise the risk of damage. The mirrors are protruding parts that are quite vulnerable to breakage or cracking during the arrangement process in the loading area or within the carriage. ‘By removing them, the risk of impact can be avoided, so the condition of the motorcycle remains intact when received at the destination,’ she said.

Secondly, emptying the fuel tank is a standard safety procedure. Fuel is flammable material, and there is potential for a fire if there is friction, pressure, or splashes during the shipment. An empty tank will greatly reduce potential hazards and make the shipment safer for all cargo. ‘These steps are part of the standard operating procedures to ensure the safety of the vehicle, staff, and the entire distribution process runs smoothly and in accordance with the rules,’ she added.
