Shared Transactions Becoming More Common, Digital Services Simplify Bill Splitting
The activity of splitting bills has become a common transactional habit, particularly during group dining, social gatherings, and collective activities. The development of digital payment services is further driving this process to become more practical.
This demand is now being addressed through the Split Bill feature on the ShoperPay application. The feature enables users to divide bills with friends by either photographing receipts or entering amounts manually.
Through this feature, users can determine each person’s share of the bill, distribute it to friends, and monitor payment status in real-time. The process, which previously required a combination of calculators, receipt photos, messaging apps, and separate transfers, can now be completed within a single service.
Eka Nilam Dari, President Director of ShopeePay Indonesia, stated that the development of digital payment services must keep pace with the changing needs of society in daily transactions.
“Splitting bills has become part of various daily activities. Through the Split Bill feature, we want to make the process more practical, from dividing the bill to monitoring the payment status directly through the ShopeePay application,” said Lala, the nickname for Eka Nilam Dari, on Wednesday (30/09/2026).
The Split Bill feature can be used by scanning or uploading a photo of a receipt. The system then reads specific information from the receipt, which users can verify before the bill is shared.
Users can then select the friends participating in the split and assign specific items or portions of the bill to each person. Once the Split Bill is created and shared, the payment status can be monitored in real-time.
For transactions without a receipt, users can enter the bill amount manually. After entering the name and total amount, users can select the participants and determine each individual’s payment amount.
This process can also be used for recurring activities with the same group of people. The application can display recent groups so that users do not need to repeat the member selection process when creating subsequent Split Bills.
In addition to receipt photos and manual input, Split Bills can be generated from various eligible ShopeePay transaction histories, including QRIS transactions, online payments, and ShopeeFood transactions.
The development of this feature demonstrates the evolving role of digital payment services in daily life. Digital wallets are no longer used solely for completing payments but are also beginning to provide functions related to managing shared transactions.
“By combining the processes of calculation, bill splitting, and payment monitoring into one feature, the Split Bill service serves as a form of technological adaptation in payment services to meet the increasingly common need for shared transactions in society,” said Lala.
She added that information regarding the Split Bill feature and its terms of use can be obtained through the ShopeePay application and official channels. Users are also advised to ensure that information regarding services or promotions is obtained through official channels to avoid links or offers impersonating ShopeePay.
