Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) detected an earthquake in the Samosir Regency, North Sumatra, early Friday morning.

Based on information and visual tremors from the BMKG received in Jakarta, the epicentre of the 3.2 magnitude earthquake, which was detected at 02.03 WIB, was located on land, 33 kilometres west of Samosir.

According to the three categories of earthquake depth used by global geological agencies, including the BMKG, the earthquake falls into the shallow earthquake category because it is within the range of 0-70 kilometres from the earth’s surface.

However, the BMKG stated that the earthquake data in Samosir was provided in the initial stage and was immediately published after the incident, so it is still possible that it will be updated as more complete data is received.

“This information prioritises speed, so the data processing results are not yet stable and may change as the data becomes more complete,” said the BMKG.

As of the publication of this report, there is no official information from the BMKG regarding the source of the earthquake, the extent of damage or casualties, or the potential for aftershocks and tsunamis.

However, the BMKG continues to urge the public to be vigilant for the possibility of aftershocks and other impacts that may accompany them.
