Seven of Indonesia's Smallest Cities, Two of Which Were Once the National Capital
Indonesia has hundreds of urban areas with municipal status, with varying territorial sizes. Among these cities, several have relatively small territorial areas compared to major cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, or Bandung. In fact, some cities in Indonesia have an area below 35 square kilometres.
The following seven smallest cities in Indonesia are listed based on their territorial area:
- Sibolga
Sibolga city in North Sumatra is known as one of the cities with the smallest area in Indonesia. Administratively, this city comprises 4 subdistricts and 17 villages. Its territorial area is only approximately 10.77 square kilometres or around 1,077 hectares. With this area, Sibolga is often referred to as the smallest city in Indonesia.
- Magelang
Magelang city in Central Java has an area of approximately 18.12 square kilometres, making it the second smallest city in Indonesia. Despite its small territory, Magelang has developed rapidly as a service-oriented city. Topographically, this city is located on a highland plateau at an elevation of approximately 380 metres above sea level.
- Mojokerto
Mojokerto city in East Java Province has a territorial area of approximately 20.217 square kilometres, making it the third smallest city in Indonesia. Its territory is surrounded by Mojokerto Regency. Administratively, this city is divided into 3 subdistricts and 18 villages. Geographically, Mojokerto is a lowland area with an average elevation of approximately 22 metres above sea level.
