Seven Districts with the Most Mosques in Central Java
Mosques constitute one of the most widely found religious facilities across various regions in Indonesia. Beyond serving as places of worship, mosques also function as centres for social activities, education, and community engagement.
In Central Java, mosques are distributed across nearly all districts and municipalities. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and the Directorate General for Islamic Community Guidance of the Ministry of Religious Affairs reveal that several regions have significantly higher concentrations of mosques compared to other areas.
The following are seven districts in Central Java with the highest numbers of mosques:
1. Demak District
Demak District ranks first with 5,519 mosques. The area, known as the City of Saints (Kota Wali), has a long history in the development of Islam on the island of Java. One of the most renowned religious sites in this region is the Grand Mosque of Demak, which is believed to be connected to the Islamic missionary work of the Nine Saints (Wali Songo).
2. Klaten District
Klaten District occupies the second position with 3,197 mosques recorded by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Its strategic location between two major cities, Yogyakarta and Surakarta, has resulted in numerous residential centres, which has in turn driven the construction of places of worship.
3. Magelang District
Magelang District ranks third with 3,073 mosques recorded by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
4. Karanganyar District
