Seven Buddhist prisoners at Lombok Barat Prison granted Vesak Day remission
Mataram (ANTARA) - Seven Buddhist prisoners serving sentences at Lombok Barat Class IIA Prison in West Nusa Tenggara have been granted special remission for Vesak Day 2570 Buddhist Era (BE). Lombok Barat Class IIA Prison Chief M. Fadli, in Mataram on Sunday, stated that the remission is part of the rehabilitation system focusing on development and social reintegration. ‘Remission is not merely a reduction in sentence but also a form of national recognition for behavioural changes and dedication of inmates in undergoing rehabilitation,’ Fadli said. He also expressed hope that this remission would motivate other prisoners to improve themselves and prepare for a better life after release. Guntur Ilman Putra, Head of the Inmate Guidance and Education Section (Binadik) at Lombok Barat Class IIA Prison, explained that all recipients received partial special remission (RK-I), reducing their sentences by one to two months. ‘They will still serve the remainder of their sentences as per the final court ruling,’ he said. Guntur added that the remission process followed procedures, ensuring all recipients met administrative and substantive requirements. ‘This Vesak Day remission is a national recognition of inmates’ commitment to rehabilitation programmes, which is one of the eligibility criteria,’ he said. Other criteria, he said, include serving at least six months, good conduct, no disciplinary violations, and active participation in rehabilitation programmes. Additionally, the remission application process uses the Inmate Rehabilitation Assessment System (SPPN), along with supervision by social welfare officers and risk assessment by evaluators.
