A member of the DPR’s Commission II from the PKB faction, Indrajaya, has urged an evaluation of the regional leader retreat programme following a series of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) sting operations against several regional heads in recent weeks.

Indrajaya believes the wave of arrests of regional leaders, ranging from governor to regent and mayor level, demonstrates a failure in the leadership development process.

“This wave of sting operations is an indicator of failure in developing regional leadership,” Indrajaya stated in his remarks on Tuesday (10/3).

According to Indra, the retreat programme is fundamentally intended to serve as a forum for consolidating national leadership. However, the recent surge in sting operation cases has raised questions about the programme’s effectiveness.

Indra confessed suspicion that the retreat has merely served as a symbolic agenda.

“The retreat for regional leaders needs to be evaluated seriously. Its purpose of serving as a forum for national consolidation is good, but the prevalence of sting operations shows we need to reassess whether the retreat material truly builds integrity or merely becomes a symbolic agenda,” he said.

Indra noted that the development of moral values should be the top priority in training public officials, not merely discipline, physical training, or semi-military methods. The main challenge to leadership in the digital era lies in the ethics of power.

Indra also views several corruption cases involving regional leaders as evidence of failure in the political cadre development process.

He referenced a statement by Nadia Arafiq, Regent of Pekalongan who was caught up in the operations and claimed she did not understand the rules because of her background as an artist.

“That statement demonstrates serious failure in the political cadre development process,” he said.

The KPK has continued to arrest several regional leaders through sting operations since the beginning of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration in October 2024, with the number reaching 11 cases.

Since the start of 2026, the total number of regional leaders caught in sting operations has reached five. These include the Mayor of Madiun, Maidi on 19 January; the Regent of Pati, Sudewo on 19 January; and the Regent of Pekalongan, Fadia Arafiq on 3 March. All three have been named as suspects.

Most recently, the Regent and Deputy Regent of Rejang Lebong, Bengkulu Province, Muhammad Fikri Thobari and Hendri, were arrested on Monday (9/3). However, both are currently still under investigation and have not yet been named as suspects.
