A series of earthquakes shook a number of regions in Indonesia from early Friday morning into the day, 5 June 2026. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded at least a dozen seismic events within a period of less than two hours, with magnitudes varying from 2.1 to 4.1. Based on BMKG’s real-time monitoring data, the earthquakes were detected in various strategic areas of Indonesia, ranging from Java, Sumatra, Sumbawa, Sumba, Timor, Halmahera, the North Maluku Sea, to the Talaud Islands. The seismic activity is of note because it occurred consecutively within a relatively short period. BMKG is continuing to monitor the dynamics of tectonic plate movements, which are the main trigger for earthquakes in these regions. Data released by BMKG also shows that the majority of the seismic activity during this observation period was concentrated in central and eastern Indonesia. Sumbawa was one of the areas recording the highest earthquake frequency compared to other regions. The Java and Sumatra regions also recorded seismic activity from the early hours. A number of earthquakes were detected in the land areas of Java and the waters of the Indian Ocean south of Java with varying depth characteristics. One of the largest magnitude earthquakes during the observation period occurred in the southern Sumatra region. The magnitude 4.1 earthquake was recorded at 03:10 WIB with a depth of 12 kilometres. Meanwhile, the southern region of Java also experienced several tremors. A magnitude 3.7 earthquake was recorded south of Java at 02:58 WIB with a depth of 13 kilometres. Not long after, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake again shook the Java region at 03:29 WIB with a depth of eight kilometres. Tectonic activity on the island of Java was also recorded at intermediate depths, including a magnitude 2.4 earthquake that occurred at 03:37 WIB with a depth reaching 130 kilometres. From all monitored areas, the Sumbawa region was the area with the highest earthquake frequency during the observation period. BMKG recorded three consecutive earthquakes in the Sumbawa region with highly varied depth characteristics. The first earthquake occurred at 02:51 WIB with a magnitude of 2.2 and a depth reaching 302 kilometres.
