Separated by Distance and Time, Caregivers Become the Lifeline in Hospital Wards
Behind the curtains of hospital wards and the corridors that never seem quiet, there are many stories about the limits of family presence. Not all children can leave their jobs to care for their hospitalized parents. Not all parents can always be at their ill child’s bedside. Some are separated by international distance, others bound by work commitments, and some simply do not have family members who can accompany them around the clock. In such situations, time appears to run slower for patients. In these vulnerable moments, the presence of a caregiver becomes meaningful. They come not as a replacement for family, but as a temporary mainstay—looking after, helping with basic needs, and even sitting to listen to the patient’s worries. One caregiver user, Dara (not her real name), admitted she decided to hire an attendant when she had to undergo hospitalisation without family. The decision was not taken lightly, but due to urgent circumstances and the need for someone who could assist during the treatment. “For myself, on 13 February 2026, because I needed company during hospitalisation as there was no family to accompany me,” Dara said via WhatsApp on Tuesday 3 March 2026. An IV attached to one arm restricted her movement and required assistance from another person. She then found caregiver services through social media. At the time, she was specifically seeking a female companion to feel more comfortable during the treatment. In her view, the most important quality of a caregiver is not only the ability to help with physical needs, but also the way they communicate and safeguard personal boundaries. “Able to accompany the client’s needs, communicate well, and safeguard privacy,” she said. The presence of the caregiver made the days spent in the hospital ward feel lighter. She felt that every moment spent with her caregiver had its own meaning. “Every moment I spend with my caregiver, I feel is very precious because the caregiver can be my guardian and companion when my family cannot accompany me,” she said. Not only did she feel helped; her family also felt reassured knowing there is someone accompanying them. “The family feel safe and happy because of the existence of caregiver services and assistance,” she said.
