Semarang Mayor Commemorates Nuzul al-Qur'an with Local Residents
The Mayor of Semarang, Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti, attended a mobile Tarawih prayers event and the city-level Nuzul al-Qur’an commemoration for 1446 Hijri/2025 AD, held as part of the Ramadan Safari with the Semarang City Forkopimda leadership, Deputy Mayor Iswar Aminuddin, religious leaders, and local residents at the field in front of the former Wonderia on Friday, 6 March 2026. In her remarks, Agustina urged people to treat the occasion of the revelation of the first verses of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as a reminder of the importance of wisdom and humanity in daily life. “Praise be to God, for tonight is a special night. The Qur’an is like a fountain of wisdom whose value transcends differences,” said Agustina. She stressed that the Qur’an is a life guide that provides universal examples of justice, humanity and compassion. Those values guide her and the Deputy Mayor in discharging the mandate to lead Semarang. “Hence, Mr. Iswar and I serve you all in the form of social service. Ensuring every policy, from health to education, is a way for us to stand at the forefront when residents need help,” she asserted. During the event, Agustina also highlighted the extreme weather that has afflicted Semarang in recent days. She expressed appreciation to staff from various departments such as BPBD, PU, Damkar, and the Department of Transportation for their hard work in addressing the impact of the adverse weather, including the evacuation of hundreds of felled trees in a short time. “So, let us offer prayers today for the health of all the officers who face challenges in resolving disasters in Semarang. I imagine they surely do not rest,” she added. The mayor also urged residents to be more disciplined in protecting the environment, particularly by ensuring clean water channels to prevent floods. She said maintaining cleanliness is a tangible form of worship. “The simplest thing is to ensure the water channels around us are not blocked. Litter is our shared responsibility,” she noted. In addition to the Nuzul al-Qur’an commemoration, the Semarang City Government also symbolically presented Qur’an books. Semarang has received a donation of 20,000 Qur’ans from the Al-Fatihah Foundation, which will be distributed to each district and mosque to support Qur’anic learning programmes for children. “This is a good-faith gesture by the Semarang City Government to fulfil the RPJMD pledge that in every afternoon, children should be disciplined in learning to recite the Qur’an,” she explained. Agustina also disclosed that Semarang will host the 31st National Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an (MTQ), planned for September. The appointment is a great honour for the city after 47 years. The Semarang City Government is currently preparing various facilities and human resources development to welcome around 11,000 guests from across Indonesia. “The challenge is to make the guests comfortable, while the residents of Semarang also feel at ease. We also propose that before or after MTQ, we could hold a National Rebana competition,” she concluded.
