Semarang City Government has again facilitated a free homecoming programme for its residents migrating to Jakarta through the 2026 Free Mudik and Return Migration programme. A total of 350 homebound travellers from Semarang City were dispatched from Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) in Jakarta to Mangkang Terminal in Semarang City.

The programme is part of the Central Java Province (Central Java) provincial-level free homecoming initiative involving municipal and district governments across Central Java as well as support from various private sector parties. A total of 325 bus fleets were dispatched by Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi to transport homebound travellers to various regions.

Danang Kurniawan, Head of the Transportation Department (Kadishub) of Semarang City, stated that Semarang City Government consistently participates in this programme annually as a form of service to residents living abroad.

“This is a routine activity every year at the provincial level. So all districts and cities, along with the province, and there is also support from the private sector, they organise the free homecoming programme,” said Danang, in a written statement, Monday (16/3/2026).

“They gather in Jakarta, at Taman Mini, the destination is Central Java. In this case, we the Semarang City Government also actively participate every year,” he added.

This year, Semarang City Government provided a total of 12 bus fleets consisting of seven fleets for the outbound homecoming route and five fleets for the return route.

Seven buses carrying homebound travellers to Semarang City were dispatched around 09.45 Western Indonesia Time together with other bus convoys heading to various cities in Central Java.

Danang explained that the free homecoming programme participants were residents of Semarang City who are members of Paguyuban Wong Semarang (PawonSemar), a community of Semarang residents living and working in Jakarta. The city government facilitated their transportation so they could return to their hometowns safely and comfortably.

Danang added that before departure, all drivers underwent health checks and the bus fleets were also inspected for vehicle compliance to ensure the safety of the homebound travellers’ journey.

According to Danang, public enthusiasm for the programme was very high. Many participants even expressed appreciation to Semarang City Government for the facilities provided.

“They were pleased to express their thanks to the Mayor, they also made a video,” said Danang.

Furthermore, Semarang City Government not only facilitated departures but also the return journey for migrants after Eid. Five bus fleets were prepared for the return journey scheduled to depart from Semarang to Jakarta on 26 March 2026 evening.

The programme funding came from the City Budget (APBD) of Semarang as a form of government support for its migrant residents.

“As for funding, it is taken from the city budget. So Semarang City Government indeed supports, welcomes and provides service ease to its migrant residents,” he concluded.
