Semarang City Government Prepares Mobile Cheap Markets Ahead of Lebaran
As Lebaran 1447 Hijri approaches, the Semarang City Government is taking steps to ensure the supply and price stability of Barang Kebutuhan Pokok dan Penting (Bapokting) at strategic sites. Mayor Agustina Wilujeng of Semarang and her team conducted on-site inspections at several locations on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. The field inspections covered Pasar Peterongan, Superindo Sriwijaya, and Pasar Karangayu. The move aims to monitor price dynamics at both traditional markets and modern retail ahead of Lebaran, a period typically associated with higher demand.
Two shopping centres, yes. One at Pasar Peterongan, and now we are at Superindo. Regarding rice prices, they are generally still normal,” said Agustina as she briefed reporters during the monitoring activity.
Although rice prices were relatively stable, Agustina highlighted a spike in prices for several horticultural commodities, especially peppers. In addition, egg prices were observed to fluctuate in the market in line with rising demand ahead of the festival.
“What is still very high is peppers. Peppers; earlier, there was the Head of the Food Security Service. I have asked them to take the necessary steps to intervene to reduce pepper prices,” she said.
As an anticipatory measure, the Semarang City Government will strengthen market intervention through the organisation of mobile cheap markets. The programme will involve a range of stakeholders to provide essential goods at more affordable prices for the public.
“We will conduct mobile cheap markets with the various stakeholders in Semarang City. The aim is to curb price surges and provide affordable essential goods for the public. Prepare for calls for mobile cheap markets and intervention,” concluded Agustina.
