Security guard killed on duty

JAKARTA (JP): A middle-aged security officer was killed on Saturday night during a fight near a public telephone booth at the Cililitan bus terminal in East Jakarta, a police official said on Monday.

Quoting witnesses at the scene, police said that Freddy Gony, 50, was attacked by four men while he was on duty at a shopping compound on Jl. Dewi Sartika in East Jakarta, some 300 meters from the bus terminal.

A postmortem examination revealed that Gony received stab wounds to the right thigh and died from excessive bleeding. Gony had also sustained abrasions to his forehead, but there appeared to be no internal injuries, forensic expert Zulhasmar Syamsu said from Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.

A relative of the victim's, who asked for anonymity, said the murder was most likely motivated by feelings of revenge.

"He (Freddy) had worked very well as a security guard for the last ten years. Some people, who planned to create trouble in the compound, might have disliked Freddy's reputation," the relative said.

He said witnesses had refused to talk to the police and had left Gony to bleed to death on the street.

Police said the dead man's assailants were still on the run. (01)
