Security guard arrested

JAKARTA (JP): Anyone who plans to hire security guard services are better off hiring personnel who have been trained by police to guarantee their skills and personal conduct, South Jakarta police chief Lt. Col. Sisno Adiwinoto said over the weekend.

Sisno made the statement after a security guard at Brawijaya Apartments in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, was arrested Friday for allegedly robbing a Japanese tenant.

Sisno said the security guard had never been trained by police.

Many police precincts in the city offer a two-week training program which costs about Rp 175,000 (US$63.60).

"A comprehensive three-month program is also offered at City Police headquarters," Sisno said.

The suspect, identified as Wen Kr, 29, allegedly assaulted and robbed tenant Toiman Soto, 55.

"Wen was arrested with the stolen goods in his possession at the apartment building about an hour after the incident," Sisno said.

Wen had allegedly stolen Rp 640,000 in cash, a mobile phone, a Walkman and two ATM cards.

Sisno said the suspect had greeted Soto when he arrived at his apartment around 11 p.m. and followed him to his room on the fifth floor.

The suspect then told Soto to be careful because there could be a criminal hanging around in the building complex.

Sisno said Wen entered the victim's room and demanded money.

Wen hit the victim with an iron bar after the victim refused to meet his request, he said. The victim rang his friend and called the police after he regained consciousness. (cst)
