In major cities, parking is often viewed as a simple matter: finding an empty space and leaving one’s vehicle. However, behind this lies a system, flow management, and disciplinary procedures that determine whether mobility in an area runs smoothly.

Rustam Rachmat, President Director of PT Securindo Packatama Indonesia (Secure Parking), stated that parking management is fundamentally about maintaining order amid an ever-increasing flow of vehicles each year.

“The most important thing is integrity. We help organise the flow so it remains orderly, and service quality is good too. The systems we use, we always endeavour to make them the most advanced and properly implemented,” said Rustam when speaking with Kompas.com on Monday (9 March 2026).

According to him, parking is not merely about providing space for vehicles, but ensuring that the flow of vehicles entering and exiting runs smoothly so as not to cause congestion within or around the area.

The majority of operations are in major cities on the island of Java, supported by approximately 10,000 to 11,000 employees, most of whom work in the field to manage parking operations at various public and commercial facilities.

Rustam stated that locations with the highest vehicle volumes are typically located in mixed-use areas—complexes that combine various functions in one area.

“Mixed-use areas usually have the highest volumes. For example, within one complex there might be a shopping mall, apartments, a hotel, even shophouses. Activity is high so vehicle traffic is also substantial,” he said.

Areas such as Mangga Dua, Kelapa Gading, and the Senayan complex exemplify areas with very dense parking activity due to the mixing of residential, office, and shopping centre functions.

“In terms of land area, of course the airport is the largest because the area is open and very expansive,” he said.

Beyond airports, the company also manages parking at various other public facilities, ranging from shopping centres to hospitals and office buildings.

For Rustam, parking holds an important role in the visitor experience at a location. He describes parking as the “first impression as well as the last impression”.

When people visit a shopping centre or public facility, he said, they first interact with the parking system. If the process is orderly and easy, the impression of the place will also be positive.

“Likewise when leaving. That is the last experience they have,” he said.
