School building collapses

JEMBER, East Java: Heavy rain caused the roof of the Ambulu III Elementary School building to collapse on Wednesday and left cracks in the walls of a number of classrooms.

The collapse occurred during school hours, but the children had already been evacuated to a nearby Moslem prayer house. The children have resumed their studies in the school's yard, Antara reported.

"I knew the roof was about to collapse, so I told the students to move out," one of the teachers said.

The building was renovated in 1991, according to another teacher. (swe)
