Satya Wacana rector to quit

SALATIGA, Central Java: The controversial rector of Satya Wacana Christian University, Jon JOI Ihalauw, says he will resign in November to allow the election of a new rector.

Ihalauw has been under heavy fire for dismissing his critic, lecturer Arief Budiman, last year. Yesterday Ihalauw said he wanted the university to revise the rules which govern the election of rectors.

Ihalauw's announcement was welcomed by his critics in the Pro- Democracy Group, who had demanded both his resignation and the reinstatement of Arief Budiman.

His critics insist that his election was undemocratic, involving, they claim, collusion with officials of the foundation that owns the university.

"The Pro-Democracy Group also demands that the management revoke the warning issued to Ariel Heryanto (for adopting a critical stance towards Ihalauw)," a spokesman for the group, Budi Susilo, said. (har)
