Satya Wacana rector to quit<\/p>\n
SALATIGA, Central Java: The controversial rector of Satya
\nWacana Christian University, Jon JOI Ihalauw, says he will resign
\nin November to allow the election of a new rector.<\/p>\n
Ihalauw has been under heavy fire for dismissing his critic,
\nlecturer Arief Budiman, last year. Yesterday Ihalauw said he
\nwanted the university to revise the rules which govern the
\nelection of rectors.<\/p>\n
Ihalauw's announcement was welcomed by his critics in the Pro-
\nDemocracy Group, who had demanded both his resignation and the
\nreinstatement of Arief Budiman.<\/p>\n
His critics insist that his election was undemocratic,
\ninvolving, they claim, collusion with officials of the foundation
\nthat owns the university.<\/p>\n
\"The Pro-Democracy Group also demands that the management
\nrevoke the warning issued to Ariel Heryanto (for adopting a
\ncritical stance towards Ihalauw),\" a spokesman for the group,
