Satya Wacana bans protests
SALATIGA, Central Java: The management of the divided campus of Satya Wacana Christian University have banned demonstrations on campus and threatened to punish anyone violating the rule.
"The university's foundation has formed a task force to enforce discipline on campus and crack down on protesters," the university foundation's legal advisor, Johannes Danny Zacharias, said yesterday.
Tensions have been running high in the prestigious university since its students, teachers and leaders were split over last year's election of rector John JOI Ihalauw and the subsequent dismissal of outspoken academic Arief Budiman.
The new rule does not appear to have frightened the supporters of Arief, who are threatening further protests unless new elections to the rectorship are held and Arief is reinstated. (har/imn)
