Satpol PP and Dishub Urged to Take Action to Crack Down on Street Robbers
JAKARTA, Kompas.com — Members of the Jakarta Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) from the PSI faction, Kevin Wu, have urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to actively participate in the fight against street robberies and urban crime in the capital. According to Kevin, handling street robberies cannot be the sole responsibility of the Metro Jaya Regional Police via the Street Robber Hunting Team, which is currently on 24-hour standby. “The Provincial Government of DKI should not wash its hands. This is not only a police matter. The provincial government, mayors, camats, lurahs, Satpol PP, Dishub, and even local administrators all need to help strengthen prevention,” Kevin said in a written statement quoted by Kompas.com on Wednesday, 19 May 2026. Kevin also highlighted the importance of security infrastructure support, from street lighting to surveillance cameras. “Street lights must be kept on, CCTV at vulnerable points must function, citizen complaint channels must respond quickly, and joint patrols must be strengthened,” he added. The statement was made amid rising street crime in Jakarta, ranging from robberies, bag snatching, stabbings, to armed motor vehicle theft. Previously, the Street Robber Hunting Team of the Metro Jaya Police arrested eight perpetrators of violent theft who often operate in several areas of Jakarta, such as Patung Kuda, Cideng, Gandaria, and Kebon Jeruk. Nevertheless, police are still pursuing five other perpetrators who remain at large, one of whom is suspected of carrying a firearm. Kevin said the fight against street robberies must be conducted seriously and consistently so that residents feel safe when carrying out activities, especially at night.
