Sardjito has new stroke service unit

YOGYAKARTA: To provide service for the increased number of stroke
victims in the region, state-owned Sardjito Hospital has opened a
new stroke unit.

Minister of Health Achmad Sujudi officially opened the new
unit on Wednesday.

According to the hospital's president director, Sri Endarini,
the new unit, the planning of which began four years ago, is
necessary because Yogyakarta has seen record highs of stroke
sufferers and deaths due to stroke.

"Every year we have over 5,000 stroke patients in the
province, one-third of whom are taken here," Endarini said.

The Stroke Service Unit, according to Endarini, would provide
integrated services to stroke patients. The unit, which will be
open 24 hours a day, will be staffed by various specialists,
including heart doctors, internists, radiologists, neurosurgeons
and rehabilitation experts.

"We will also try to involve family members in the treatment,"
Endarini said.

Minister Sujudi also officially opened the hospital's new
Integrated Heart Center, which will enable the hospital to
provide better cardiovascular services.

"With this new center, hopefully, we will be able to turn
Sardjito into the country's second largest hospital for heart
services after Jakarta's Jantung Harapan Kita Hospital," said
Endarini. -- JP
