SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: The Samarinda Botanical garden
(KRS) will be developed to become a research center for flora and
fauna in East Kalimantan.
Earth Foundation chairman Ade Fadli said here on Sunday that
the decision was made in a coordination meeting between local
nongovernmental organizations and the local administration.
Fadli said the botanical garden should improve its function,
not only as a recreation resort, but also as a conservation area
and model for environmental conservation in the province.
"That is why local NGOs and the provincial administration plan
to use the botanical garden as a research center for flora and
fauna in the province," he said.
Mulawarman University, which was given the 300-hectare
botanical garden by CV Kayu Mahakam, a forest concessionaire, in
1974, has worked in cooperation with the German and Japanese
governments to manage it since 1976. --Antara
