Sahroni Demands Thorough Investigation into Brimob Officer's Fatal Assault on Madrasah Student in Maluku: National Evaluation Needed
Jakarta, VIVA – A Maluku Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officer with the initials MS has been named a suspect in the alleged assault of AT (14), a junior Islamic secondary school (MTs) student, who died after reportedly being struck with a helmet and falling from a motorcycle.
Maluku Police Chief Inspector General Dadang Hartanto confirmed that the process for the perpetrator’s dishonourable discharge (PTDH) would be expedited.
Deputy Chairman of House of Representatives Commission III Ahmad Sahroni described the incident as deeply troubling and inconsistent with the directives of the National Police Chief. He stated that the incident must serve as the basis for a comprehensive evaluation across the police force.
“This is an extremely distressing incident that must be thoroughly investigated. The National Police Chief has been very firm and clear that police officers must be humane and prioritise preventive measures. This means every decision in the field must be measured, professional, and place public protection first. I therefore urge that this incident become the subject of serious evaluation for all provincial police commands throughout Indonesia,” Sahroni said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday, 23 February 2026.
Sahroni also reminded provincial police commands and their subordinate units to ensure that the use of force in the field is proportionate and correctly targeted.
“This rightly must be investigated and dealt with swiftly. But beyond that, there must be an internal institutional evaluation within the National Police at the provincial command level and below — regarding how officers interact during law enforcement operations. Violence must not be used unless genuinely urgent or life-threatening. This is especially so when dealing with minors, and even when action is taken, it must not be excessive. This has happened several times now,” he stressed.
