Rustini Muhaimin Promotes Early Literacy and Numeracy: A Future Investment
Founder of Jendela Dunia Kita (JDK), Rustini Muhaimin greeted students of MI YAPPI Balong in Gunungkidul during the “Ayo Membaca” (Let’s Read) initiative. During the event, she emphasised the importance of instilling literacy and numeracy habits from an early age as preparation for the future. “Alhamdulillah, today we are together at the”Ayo Membaca” initiative at MI YAPPI Balong. This is not just a reading activity, but an investment in Indonesia’s children’s future,” she said at the MI YAPPI Balong hall on Thursday, 28 May 2026. According to Rustini, literacy must be cultivated as a habit from childhood. Children who engage with books are more likely to dream boldly, think critically, and have confidence in facing the challenges of the times. “I believe literacy must be instilled from an early age. Children close to books will be more courageous in dreaming, think critically, and have confidence in facing the future,” she added. She also highlighted the ongoing challenges in Indonesian children’s literacy and numeracy levels, stressing that the reading culture must extend beyond schools to homes and communities. “Today’s challenge is clear. Indonesia’s literacy and numeracy levels still need continuous improvement. Therefore, reading culture must not stop at schools but also thrive in homes and surrounding communities,” she continued. In addition to reading literacy, Rustini stressed the importance of numeracy skills for children. The ability to calculate, understand logic, and solve problems is vital in today’s rapidly changing era. “Alongside a love for reading, children need to embrace numeracy. Skills in calculation, logical thinking, and problem-solving will be vital in the modern era,” she said. She urged all stakeholders to make reading an enjoyable activity for children. “Let us make reading a joyful habit, not a tedious obligation. One book read today can open a window to the world for our children’s future,” she concluded. At the event’s conclusion, Rustini, accompanied by Nur Nadlifah, Secretary-General of DPP Perempuan Bangsa, and Kaisar Abu Hanifah, a member of the DPR RI from FPKB, along with the JDK team, expressed appreciation to teachers, parents, and all parties supporting children’s learning and development.
