Russian Intelligence Helps Iran Attack the US
The conflict in the Middle East has raged since the United States (US) and its ally Israel attacked Iranian territory. In the wider war, Russia is reported to have provided intelligence information to Iran to help Tehran strike US military assets in the region. According to Euronews on Saturday (7/3), two officials familiar with US intelligence reports stated that the information could be used by Iran to launch attacks on American targets in the Gulf. The same report was carried by The Washington Post, a prominent US newspaper, which cited two US officials familiar with the matter, saying that Russia is alleged to have supplied intelligence to Iran that could help it attack warships, aircraft, and other US military assets in the Middle East. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the information. However, US intelligence has not yet found evidence that Moscow directly directed Iran on how to use the information in the ongoing conflict. If proven, this would represent the first indication that Russia has begun to become indirectly involved in the war that began after the joint attack by the United States and Israel on Iran about a week earlier. Russia does not supply weapons to Iran The Kremlin or the Russian presidential office has not supplied weapons to its close ally, Iran, which is at war with the US and Israel. The Kremlin said, as reported by Russian news agencies TASS and Reuters, on Friday (6/3), that Iran has so far not contacted Moscow to request assistance of any kind, including weapons supplies. ‘Regarding the current situation, there has been no request from Iran,’ Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday (5/3). ‘Our position is well known. It remains unchanged,’ he insisted. Close Russia–Iran relations Russia is one of Iran’s closest partners in the Middle East. Moscow has previously condemned the US and Israel’s attack on Iran as an act of baseless armed aggression. Earlier in 2025, the Iranian and Russian governments signed a strategic partnership agreement that includes cooperation in facing common threats. However, the agreement did not include mutual defence obligations like the security pact that Russia has with North Korea. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed that military cooperation between Iran and Russia is not new and not a secret that has been hidden from public view. “Military cooperation between Iran and Russia is not a secret. We have worked together in the past, and this cooperation continues, and I hope it will continue in the future,” Abbas Araghchi told NBC News.
