Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Russian Government has responded to Indonesia’s decision to join the Board of Peace (BoP) and plans to deploy peacekeeping forces to Gaza. Moscow has affirmed respect for this step as Indonesia’s sovereign decision, although Russia itself is not involved in the BoP mechanism.

This was communicated by Sergei Tolchenov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Indonesia. In remarks to media, he stated that Russia understands the rationale behind President Prabowo Subianto’s decision.

“We respect Indonesia’s sovereign decision and understand the reasoning behind President Prabowo Subianto’s decision,” said Tolchenov during a press conference at the Russian Ambassador’s residence in South Jakarta on Thursday, 26 February 2026.

Tolchenov noted that Russia understands Indonesia’s desire to protect the Palestinian people and promote a two-state solution as a resolution to the Middle Eastern conflict.

“The Indonesian President and Foreign Minister have conveyed that Indonesia continues to desire a two-state solution in Palestine and the Middle East,” he said.

However, he emphasised that Russia did not participate in establishing the BoP and does not support the resolution that formed its basis. “Russia did not participate and did not even vote,” he stated.

According to Tolchenov, the BoP does not explicitly include a two-state solution agenda, including the establishment or recognition of a Palestinian state. He also highlighted the absence of Palestinian representation within the BoP structure.

“In the BoP, there is no discussion of a two-state solution. There is no matter of establishing or recognising a Palestinian state. Palestine is also not represented, whilst Israel is,” he said.

Tolchenov added that Russia perceives the possibility of the BoP being utilised by the United States for interests beyond the Gaza conflict.

“It appears that President Donald Trump and America wish to use the BoP not only for the Middle East, but also as a vehicle for addressing other regional crises,” he said.

He assessed that the BoP does not represent the majority of global powers, as several major countries, including Russia and China, are not participating.

Nevertheless, Russia affirmed that it continues to respect the decisions of countries joining the BoP and will monitor developments.

“This process is only beginning. We are not saying we support it, but we respect the decisions of countries that have joined and will see what they do,” he said.

Tolchenov affirmed that Russia remains committed to promoting resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a two-state solution. Russia also stated that it has recognised the Palestinian state and provides humanitarian assistance to Gaza through bilateral channels.

“The ultimate objective is two states in the Middle East, Israel and Palestine. We have bilateral channels and direct communication with Palestinian leaders,” he concluded.
