Russia Provides Intelligence to Iran to Help Attack the United States Military
Russia is reported to have supplied intelligence to Iran to help Tehran attack the United States military in the Middle East. The Washington Post reported that two American officials familiar with the matter said Moscow is suspected of providing intelligence that could assist Iran in targeting US warships, aircraft, and other American military assets in the region. According to Euronews, on Saturday (7 March 2026), two officials aware of the intelligence briefing stated that the information could be used by Iran to carry out attacks on American targets in the Gulf. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss sensitive information publicly. Nevertheless, US intelligence has not found evidence that Moscow directly instructed Iran on how to use the information in the ongoing conflict. If proven, this would be the first sign that Russia has begun to engage indirectly in the war that began after the joint United States and Israel attack on Iran about a week earlier. It is known that Russia is one of Iran’s closest partners. Moscow previously condemned the US and Israel attack on Iran as unprovoked armed aggression. Earlier in 2025, the Iranian government and Russia signed a strategic partnership agreement that includes cooperation in facing common threats. However, the agreement did not include mutual defence obligations, such as the security pact that Russia has with North Korea. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasised that military cooperation between Iran and Russia is not new and is not a tightly held secret. “Military cooperation between Iran and Russia is not a secret. We have worked together in the past, and this cooperation continues, and I hope it will continue in the future,” Araghchi told NBC News in an interview this week.
