Russia Accuses Starlink of Being a New US Spy Tool

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov accused the US Department of Defense headquarters, the Pentagon, of using the Starlink satellite communications system to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs.

Alimov highlighted the issue of using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite internet systems, which he termed illegal, at the International Security Forum in Moscow on Wednesday (27 May).

“It is no secret that this technology, particularly Starlink, which provides internet access without going through national regulators, is used to interfere in internal affairs of countries, including organising protests,” he said.

SpaceX, the aerospace company managing Starlink, does not hide the fact that it is a Pentagon contractor, the diplomat said.

“We are now seeing how this company is expanding in the global market under the guise of satellite communication convenience, effectively gaining the ability to influence foreign populations. This is undoubtedly a worrying trend,” Alimov said.

Therefore, he said, Russia is seeking to ensure transparent regulation of the system’s use and compliance by operators with national laws of the countries where they operate (Antara).

Tensions in the Middle East are escalating. Iranian state media has labelled Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service as a legitimate target for attack.

SpaceX’s decision to block Starlink access for Russian forces has had devastating consequences. Moscow’s drone strike coordination has been crippled, providing a golden opportunity for Ukrainian counterattacks.

With second-generation Starlink, people living far from cities can continue to access digital healthcare services without having to travel long distances.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin has announced the TeraWave project, a 6 Tbps satellite internet network designed to challenge Elon Musk’s Starlink dominance.

US President Donald Trump is considering airstrikes against Iran following the regime’s harsh crackdown on protesters.
