Rural youths complain
Rural youths complain
From Neraca
Like hundreds of other rural youths, I am a member of the
karang taruna (neighborhood youth association) in the village.
I joined the association because I believe youths are the
backbone of a country, the motor of development.
However, one week after its establishment, no board members or
other members were seen again.
The reason for their absence is realistic enough. They have
gone to the cities to look for work.
Will rural conditions always remain like this? Only the elder
people stay in the villages.
When will our nation progress?
I would like to appeal to the business tycoons who still feel
committed to the small people. I request Mr. Probosutedjo, Mrs.
Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana and others to establish labor-intensive
industries in our region so the rural youths do not have to go to
the cities in search of work.
Located close to the northern coast, our region has, for
example, potential gypsum and quartz quarries. Eighty percent of
the karang taruna members have finished high school. Our demands
are not high. It is our wish to stay in the rural area and earn
our living here.
