Like hundreds of other rural youths, I am a member of the
\nkarang taruna (neighborhood youth association) in the village.<\/p>\n
I joined the association because I believe youths are the
\nbackbone of a country, the motor of development.<\/p>\n
However, one week after its establishment, no board members or
\nother members were seen again.<\/p>\n
The reason for their absence is realistic enough. They have
\ngone to the cities to look for work.<\/p>\n
Will rural conditions always remain like this? Only the elder
\npeople stay in the villages.<\/p>\n
When will our nation progress?<\/p>\n
I would like to appeal to the business tycoons who still feel
\ncommitted to the small people. I request Mr. Probosutedjo, Mrs.
\nSiti Hardiyanti Rukmana and others to establish labor-intensive
\nindustries in our region so the rural youths do not have to go to
\nthe cities in search of work.<\/p>\n
Located close to the northern coast, our region has, for
\nexample, potential gypsum and quartz quarries. Eighty percent of
\nthe karang taruna members have finished high school. Our demands
\nare not high. It is our wish to stay in the rural area and earn
\nour living here.<\/p>\n
